Welcome to The Barrier Breakdown: Disrupting Mental Health!
This week we are joined by Juliet B Martinez, a freelance writer in the parenting space whose work revolves around child development and the mental and physical health of families. As the pandemic progressed through 2020 and entered into 2021, an estimated 30-40 million Americans were and still are at risk of residential eviction. We talk about this crisis as well as what mental health clinicians can do to help the victims of eviction deal with its trauma.

Episode 16: Are You Ready for Open Notes?
Friday Apr 02, 2021
Friday Apr 02, 2021
Welcome to The Barrier Breakdown: Disrupting Mental Health!
This week we are joined by Steve Oneill, the Open Note specialist in behavioral and mental health, faculty at the center of bioethics at Harvard medical school, and adjunct assistant professor at Simmons university. He is interested in how the transparency of Open Note writing in behavioral health can foster trust and partnership, patient engagement, and can even destigmatize mental health.
As a component of the Cures Act, Open Notes was supposed to go live last November, but now it's beginning on April 5th! Listen in to find out the timetable for these changes, the scope of the notes that will be made open, and the ethical and legal concerns of omissions.

Episode 15: Past, Present, and Future: Time Oriented Interventions
Friday Mar 26, 2021
Friday Mar 26, 2021
Welcome to The Barrier Breakdown: Disrupting Mental Health!
Today we are joined by Dr. Jane Ogden and her PhD student, Dr. Amelia Dennis.
Dr. Ogden is a prefessor of health psychology at the university of Surrey UK and has published over 200 research papers and 8 books. Dr. Dennis is focused on reseaching attachement theory and nostalgia, which is a key factor in their lockdown related research. In a recent study, subjects were given instructions to perform imaginative exercises about themselves in the past, present, and future. The results of these ruminations grants key insights into ways in which mental health practitioners can encourage positive thoughts and growth in their clients, even during hardships such as the Covid-19 pandemic.

Episode 14: Trends in Suicidality During Covid 19
Friday Mar 19, 2021
Friday Mar 19, 2021
Welcome to The Barrier Breakdown: Disrupting Mental Health!
This week our guests are doctors Elizabeth Sysak and Jack Rozel, who work with Resolve Crisis Services. Dr. Sysak oversees Resolve, Western Psychiatric Hospital's Psychiatric Services, and provides lectures and presentations on motivation interviewing, crisis intervention, trauma and leadership. Dr. Rozel is an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh, and the medical director for UPMC's Resolve Crisis Services.
Resolve's mantra is that everyone defines his or her own crisis, and with that mentality this community crisis program delivers over 125,000 services each year. Resolve is a 24-hour, 365-day crisis service that’s free to all Allegheny County residents. Callers can talk to a live person whenever needed, a simple act that has become unprecedentedly scarce over the past year.
You can call their hotline for 24-hour crisis help at 1-888-7-YOU-CAN (796-8226). To see the other work Resolve does, check out Resolve's website at https://www.upmc.com/services/behavioral-health/resolve-crisis-services
For more information and non-urgent matters, call 412-864-5004 or email resolve Crisis Services at resolve@upmc.edu

Friday Mar 12, 2021
Friday Mar 12, 2021
Welcome to The Barrier Breakdown: Disrupting Mental Health!
Our guest this week is CBI's own Dr. Kaleigh Bantum! Dr. Bantum has presented at a number of national conferences, taught at local universities, and serves as the Co-Director of CBI's Center for Education. Her experience makes her particularly well suited to discuss suicidality in children, adolescents and young adults, as well as the evidence-based practices required to meet individual needs and build strong positive relationships with her clients. In this episode, we discuss some of the hurdles clinicians face when helping clients with suicidal ideations or actions, as well as how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected youth in our country.

Episode 12: Diagnosing Autism through Genetics
Friday Mar 05, 2021
Friday Mar 05, 2021
Welcome to The Barrier Breakdown: Disrupting Mental Health!
This week our guest is Dr. Samuel Chawner, a research fellow from Cardiff University's Center for Human Developmental Science. His reasearch integrates genetics and psychology to provide new insights into child development and autism. Rather than disgnosing autism purely on symptoms, Dr. Chawner's studies use genetic testing to produce a more inclusive diagnostic procedure that aims to help individuals who don't meet the criteria for autism but still need help. We also discuss the effects of Covid-19 in Europe and the UK, as well as some of the differences between the US healthcare system and the European model.
You can find Dr. Chawner's Cardiff University staff page as well as links to his publications here: https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/people/view/2422703-

Episode 10: Using Social Media to Predict Psychosis
Friday Feb 19, 2021
Friday Feb 19, 2021
Welcome to The Barrier Breakdown: Disrupting Mental Health!
Sometimes it seems like social media makes you crazy, but what if analyzing user data actually gave us indications that someone was experiencing the early stages of psychosis? That's the question that our guest this week, Dr. Michael Birnbaum, wants to answer!
Dr. Birnbaum is an attending physician for New York's Zucker Hillside Hospital and the program director for Northwell Health's early treatment program—a clinical and research initiative for adolescents and young adults in the early stages of psychosis. His research aims to develop methods of identifying and diagnosing the onset of psychosis through the avenues of social media and the internet at large. This effort combines the use of both text and images to give an early-warning, which a clinician can then use to narrow down or even dismiss their diagnosis.

This week we sit down with Dan Lynch, Founder and Managing Partner of The Lynch Law Group.
